On Tuesday, the governments of Venezuela and Colombia signed an agreement to reactivate the electrical power connection, within the framework of a new stage of binational integration, the Venezuelan Ministry of Electric Power stated.

The measure comes four days after the leaders of both countries discussed the matter in Caracas. The agreement was signed between the National Electric Corporation (Corpoelec) of Venezuela and the Institute for Planning and Promotion of Energy Solutions for Non-Interconnected Zones (IPSE) of Colombia, according to a statement published by the Ministry on Telegram.

“The alliance represents trust, cooperation, and a shared vision of energy sovereignty for both peoples,” the ministry stated, without offering further technical details on the scope of the electrical interconnection agreement.

The text reads, “Together with President Gustavo Petro, we participated in the Third Meeting of the Colombia-Venezuela Neighborhood and Integration Commission, addressing seven strategic areas of a shared agenda for integration and the well-being of both our peoples. At this meeting, we worked intensively on revitalizing trade, promoting electrical and gas interconnection, and coordinating the fight against criminal gangs. These are firm steps guided by Bolívar’s spirit of unity for the benefit of our nations.”

Last Friday, Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodríguez and Colombian President Gustavo Petro committed to bilateral energy integration. The presidents discussed the electrical interconnection in western Venezuela, a border region that,

Rodríguez acknowledged, suffers from the disinvestment in the national electrical system resulting from sanctions that have hampered the supply of spare parts and maintenance.

“The electrical interconnection is now just a step away, and so is the gas interconnection,” the Venezuelan Acting President said.
